UNION LABOR RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION (ULRA)
was organized in 1962. Labor Leaders in the Portland Building Trade
Movement united and organized a non-profit corporation for the sole
purpose of providing housing for seniors. In essence, its goals
were to provide housing and related facilities and services for
the elderly on a non-profit basis. Their dreams were realized with
the first three Union Manors: Westmoreland's
Union Manor (1966),
Marshall Union Manor (1974)
and Kirkland Union Manor I (1980).
In 1980 the Union Labor Retirement Association offered nearly 700
quality retirement apartments to Portland area seniors.
The UNION RETIREMENT
ASSOCIATION (URA) was formed in
1983 for the construction of Kirkland
Union Manor II (1985) located
on the same campus as Kirkland Union Manor I. Then in 1993,
KIRKLAND UNION MANOR ASSOCIATION (KUMA)
was formed for the construction of
Kirkland Union Manor III (1995),
the last building phase on the Kirkland site. Then in 2000,
KIRKLAND UNION PLAZA ASSOCIATION
(KUPA), was formed for the construction
of Kirkland Union
Plaza (2002),
located
in Vancouver, Washington.
Today, UNION
LABOR RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION sponsor
of the Union Manors, proudly provides quality housing to over 900
Portland and Vancouver area seniors.
The Board of Directors for
the ULRA, URA,
KUMA and
KUPA provide guidance in the operation
of the Union Manors. Each director is a member of the Columbia
Pacific Building and Construction Trades Council.
Board President Earl B. Kirkland has been serving the board since
the ULRA was originally incorporated in 1962. President Kirkland,
the Board of Directors, and their Unions exhibit true dedication,
generosity, and thoughtfulness. They believe that the true essence
of a retirement home is not the concrete, mortar, and steel of which
it is built, but the hearts that beat within its walls. The various
local unions have been consistently supportive and generous to the
Union Manors, donating a multitude of items over the years.
Manor Management Services, Inc. (MMS)
provide the Management and Marketing for the
Union Manors. MMS President Patrick C. O'Toole has been dedicated
to the elderly since 1986. He is a member of the American Association
of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) and a certified Retirement
Housing Professional. Mr. O'Toole is active in the Oregon Alliance
of Senior and Health Services (OASHS) and has held the positions
of President, Vice-President, and Treasurer. MMS believes that retirement
homes are not islands within the community but regular participants
in community affairs. MMS has made premier service the standard
by which they serve their residents. Their motto is, "We work
with what we care about - housing for the elderly - and enjoy doing
what we're good at."
